Gored to Tears

Catching up on the papers when we got in last night, I found a little gem buried in the snippets section of the news. Seems an American was paralyzed after getting gored by a bull in Pamplona.

The Running of the Bulls, and other associated events in Pamplona has become so romanticized and revered that people pay good money to visit a beautiful country and end up hanging from the horns of large, angry animal. Sure. And they say women are hard to understand.

Hemingway wrote about it, but probably by watching from some window. Writers are the original wimps. We observe, we imagine, we make astute comparisons, we contrast and we create. We don't actually do anything. Can't write about it if you're dead.

As for the paralyzed bond trader from New York, all I an say is 'hell of a way to get a story about what you did on your summer vacation, buddy'. Eedjit.

And to think I won't even drink the water when I go away. Probably because I'm not a bond trader.

The real problem is that this guy will get a huge amount of publicity and sympathy out of his stupidity. Along with that, he'll automatically go to the front of the line for repairs to his damaged body.......ahead of people who have probably been waiting for years.

I cheer anytime I see an animal get the better of a person or persons involved in stupid inhumane stunts such as the running of the bulls, bullfights, circus acts, etc. Purposely placing yourself in a front of a charging bull...what did you think was going to happen?

Nah, the real problem is he didn't ask any of the locals how to do the run. Stuff is risky all the time, mostly doesn't result in paralysis. The tricks are:
1) stay to the inside of the corners. the bulls are heavy, they slide to the outside.
2) Don't run drunk. Non-Europeans (often Americans, but also Canadians and Australians) will still be drunk from the night before. And they occasionally try to snap shots of themselves..."Loookit...I'm really doing this" on their camera phones
3)If you fall down, stay down. Cover your head with your arms and roll to the inside of the corners/curbs if poss. Gorings happen while you are standing up. the bull can't avoid you and runs right into your back.

It's times like this that I'm glad I don't have the money to travel. Stuck at home the riskiest thing I can do is open my mail at the end of the month when the bills come. Now that's terrifying!!
