Sugar, Sugar

Archie has proposed to Veronica.

The comic books at the cottage will forever be changed, in my mind. Re-reading them year in and year out, as I have for nearly 40 years, will never be the same.

Now I know how it ends.

The upside? If this red-headed wunderkind can ditch his commitment-phobic ways after 70 years, anyone can!

I think Betty's been doin' Reggie on the side all this time, anyway.

(Oh, and bonus points to anyone who has the title I used singing in their brain now. "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies was the second 45 I ever bought. The first was Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. My god, I was so cool back then.)

Ahhh... honey, honey... doo doo doo doo doo.

I went to Riverdale High School in Montreal. Archie was my favourite Halloween costume. Now he's all growed up.

Sigh.

Time to 'one up' you Chris...

...My last name is the same as the Principal.

Imagine going through school being asked how Jughead is doing?

Huh... I couldn't even tell you the principal's name. I guess in my books you really are anonymous.

Ah you know Archie will change his mind yet again and swing back once more to Betty, or someone else he sees out of the corner of his eye. I don't know how he managed to string either of them along! In real life Betty would've dumped Archie for Mr. Natural and Ronnie would've moved on to Fritz the Cat.

It is amazing how something like this has turned the media into a frenzy. Although I have no problems with it, it just amazes me how media reports things anymore. A hang nail is news in some areas. C'mon. It was a comic but I guess it is line with the political structure of this country. A circus, a comedy in itself but a very expensive one. Nothing wrong with some light humour these days, I suppose?

Best of luck Archie...PM's job? Next step in life?

In my experience Archie went for the wrong girl. Having "been there done that" with a few rich girls, i can say that they are little prepared for the trials of life and fold when under pressure. Much better to find a girl like Betty who has many life skills, and good commons sense. I am sure that Betty can take what life brings her without much complaining and probably a smile on her face. That is worth more than any amount of money. By the way, in Archie's scenario he can also expect Mr. Lodge to be the king of Archie's home, since likely Mr. Lodge will be paying the bills. Again having seen this in many of my friends lives the Rich father calls the shots in their kids homes since, again... he is supporting them. I don't envy Archie one bit.

Archie's proposal is almost as big a deal as it was when Blondie got a job. That was a huge ruckus, especially from the conservative types (and the Dagwood purists, conceivably) who could not abide this draconian departure from the strip's theme.

Archie's proposal is a significantly bigger deal than when the wife in Family Circus changed her hairstyle. No one outside of a seriously freaked-out Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, and PJ gave a rat's ass about that. And I'm ashamed that I can easily recall all their names.

Myself, I'm chagrined that Archie didn't go with Betty. I felt she was a better developed character--I have an issue of her own comic where she reflected upon her deceased writing mentor and composed a novel for publication, so she resonates with me. But also, she's just the better person! Veronica represents a few of the mortal sins! She was only ever the bad foil to Betty! I'm guessing they're setting up for further drama when Archie realizes what a mistake he made and tries to make amends to Betty. Sales aren't what they used to be, after all.
