Me 'n Erma

Oh, how long I've waited to type those words.

I just found out I've been named Humor Writer of the Month by the Erma Bombeck Writer's Workshop.

The late Erma Bombeck is my hero. She started writing the year I was born, 1964, and I grew up reading her column in the Hamilton Spectator lying on my belly on the living room floor.

This might not mean much to many of you, but her writing has inspired me forever. Everything I aim for stems from what I learned from her work - to be funny, to be kind and to not humiliate my family too badly.

I love you, Erma.

Congratulations seestor. However, we'll be the judges about the humiliating the family part.

Well deserved.

Wow. I always thought you guys were the same person! Does this mean you are, like, younger than her?

Congrats! You're in good company.

And so is Ms. Bombeck.

I read her work as a kid and recall it well. As for Lorraine, I only see the strains AFTER she 'fessed up. Believe it or not, that is how a writer influences you. Unless you are a shameless, hardcore, recidivest type, you start by imitating your heroes, then embarassment and experience makes you to move on and adapt your own style. The influence shows up somehow, regurgitated and expressed anew. (How about a magazine on writer influences called Regurge Action?) Lorraine has her own style now but it is changing. She is young and still writing a lot. She may feel its premature for her first book. A first pamphlet or brochure, now you're talking. (joke) happy new year, Lor.

Congratulations and well deserved. I have always thought that your writing style reminded me of Bombeck. And I wondered if anyone else noticed the similarities. I guess they did.

Happy New Year!

Congratulations. You and Rosie are the only two things worth reading in the Toronto Star, and the first thing that I do on Saturday is turn to your column in the Wheels section.

Well done!
