Arctic Smart

Feature is up here, column is here.

There will be more pics when I cobble together the Adventures, and when Webgod gets them up....

I'm aware the meerkats are far cuter. But they wouldn't hold the banner.

Wow that sounds like quite the trip.
You're brave. Thankfully you came back safe and sound. I'm jealous I want some advanced driver training.

Great picture - was that before or after?

In spite of what I've heard about the safety of these critters, I would still be leery of mixing with trucks.

How did they handle wind buffeting?

Still a way cool trip though.

Only experienced wind hassle on one part of the trip, in a high unsheltered part of the highway. Passing huge logging trucks didn't cause as much swing as I get in my van - these cars are low to the ground, and the snow tires just stuck.

Any sub compact isn't going to fare well with huge trucks. Hell, most mid-sized won't. If I could recommend one thing I've learned from writing for this section, it's that everyone - everyone - should take a day or weekend advanced driver training.

Skid school, winter driving school, advanced driving - for 500 bucks, you could save your life.

I bet you didn't need coffee after that near head on.Good job on the accident avoidance. How is the height adjustment on your Smart car? I just saw your picture holding the banner, you are a tall person. It sounds like your co driver was tall too. Was it OK for space side to side?

You really forget you're in a sub-compact car. Tons of head space, and tons of leg room. They stagger the seats a little - you can barely notice, but it means you're not hitting elbows or anything.

I was impressed. I've driven some eeny little cars, and rarely been able to forget I'm in an eeny little car.

Yes, I've decided that eeny is a word.

The meerkats would loved to have held the banner but once again, cute mammals are prevented from advancing their careers due to the lack of opposable thumbs.

Was the off road incident of Sommerfeld's if-I-did-not-have-bad-luck-would-have-no-luck-at-all? Judging by the photgraphs you have shown, there appears to have been a whole CW McColl convoy thing happening while driving... Why you?

The lead SUV took the ditch, the Smart behind that one got through, but the truck was over the line.

I ended up in the snow rooster kicked up from the SUV and the headlights of the truck coming at me. Little choice with my lane disappearing, and the ruts from where the first SUV went grabbed my tires.
