The Learning Isn't All on the Cirriculum

Great, direct OpEd in the New York Times today. It's speaking directly to college/university students, and I wish I'd had something similar to read way back when. No, don't ask how far back. Just accept 'way' as a reference point.

Like most advice, it won't be heeded by those who could most benefit, but I still suggest parents should forward it their offspring and hope something sinks in after the inevitable eyeroll. Though I refuse to climb aboard the If Only I'd Known Train, there are still some shortcuts that would have saved me pain, grief, money... and time. And the older I get, the more I can find a way to survive the pain, endure the grief, and replace the money, but never the time. Time's a bitch. And she ain't on our side.

Actually, I just had a thought. Re-read that advice, and just apply it to wherever you are. Age doesn't matter; it's attitude. Except for the dump your spouse part - that might make Thanksgiving a little awkward if you aren't a college student. And besides, everyone knows you only get divorced in January, after making the kids suffer through a miserable final Christmas.

Removed by me - way too many typos...

And your C & A's reactions were?

Or did you get a patronizing response from each - in their own unique manner, of course?

Damnit! Felix is blowing again -- and it's been raining on and off most of the day here. Perhaps he's doing a Moses-like experiment in his pool? I'd also hate to see his gas bill -- he keeps his pool heater and hot tub heater on (thermostat) all summer...

I digress...

Now if he had heeded at least one of the pearls of widsdom, he may have never returned to this ocuntry and life would be less stressful - for me, at any rate.

I truly beileive he also 'dated' outside of his race -- we firmly believe that his wife, Monique, is an alien, worse case scenario... best case, lovely tolerant and patient lady from northern PQ.

Have I ever mentioned his sneezes? Something resembling the noise heard just before the bomb went off in Nagasaki, by my reckoning, at least... and there are between four and 7 repeats; there it goes again. It can be heard OVER his leaf blower.

Sorry for the hijack, LS... it's been a long day and I have to go wrestle Sheryl to see if she's left me any wine for our fruit fly traps.

The author is right on. I think most students do this instinctively however. What probably happens to some is they over do frosh week which becomes 'month' then discover by mid terms they have to work as well. Some overcompensate and shut down the enjoyment side. Some manage both well and some major in fun. If you get university life happening right, you likely have the tools to make life right. What you do with them afterwards is your success,concern...or fault.

Oh, I don't actually send my OWN kids links to things. They don't even read what I write, let alone what I read or recommend.

Hmmm. He says " it was running a dinky club that set me on the path to seeing myself as someone who could run a business." Perhaps he's the one that got that kid who got "arrested" in trouble. Little Dinky Clubs should be outlawed. Except in the Catholic church, of course.
