Here comes 2012...and The Globe and Mail

2011 isn't the only thing coming to a close for me. I've published my final columns with the Toronto Star, as of last Monday's Motherlode, and the Wheels column that's up today. It's been a blast - I couldn't have taken a better step in my career then spending the past 5 years there.

Soooooooooo. Where to find me? The Globe and Mail! I'm officially on board the Drive section as of January 1. Going national is a great move and terrific opportunity. My first column will run January 6th - the auto section runs on Fridays. You're gonna have to get used to getting your car fix a day early!

Motherlode will live on with the Hamilton Spectator, and on my site, of course. You'll be able to keep finding all my stuff here, but the Globe has lovely glossy printing.

2011 has been a crazy year, in more ways than one. Yeah, that one too. It's been wonderful and difficult, enlightening and raw. I wouldn't trade the learning for anything, but I'm looking forward to 2012; hope you'll stay put for the ride.

Congratulations! Going national, and soon, THE WORLD!!!

You mentioned Hill Street Blues in your Wheels column. One of the best shows ever, and I had a tremendous crush on Daniel J. Travanti.

G&M will be carrying your stories? That's neat. Will have to start getting them again, I used to read them when David Grainger had a byline. I wonder if he still does?

Thanks, guys. "nimrod" in the previous post nudged the announcement to today, instead of tomorrow. So, "nimrod", which paper or car manufacturer do you work for?!

Buzz - I'm columning and writing in the Drive section. It'll still be my usual form - just a new spouse=)

Guess it's now time to cancel my "Saturday only" subscription to the Star. I've wanted to get the Globe for ages for their Business section. Never got around to it. Now is the time.

Congratulations! I, too, will not be sorry to see the junk in 2011s trunk in my rearview (get it? HA! I make myself laugh) mirror.

I look forward to reading you and David Booth in the same paper now.

For some strange reason "cantical" makes me want to turn my head and cough. Huh... weird.

Glad to hear you're going 'Globe'al.

Just as long as you don't go 'Post'al.

Happy New Year to you and all Lorrainians everywhere.

Phew! I was surprised and sad to read that your article in today's Star is your last...until I signed onto your website. What a relief to know I can still follow you in the Globe and your website. Yay! And Happy New Year.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading you columns in the star. Your column in the wheels section is the first thing I go to. Saturday morning with the Star just won't be the same.
I 'm glad I can get your columns on your blog still. All the best at the Globe, in my opinion, the stuffiest paper there is.

I was startled to read in today's column in the Star that it was your last one there - but very relieved after reading this post to hear you are still writing! Reading your columns has been a highlight of the Star for me for the last couple of years. Thank you, and best wishes for your work at the Globe!

Catherine Davis

P.S. I also enjoy your blog... you have a similar twisted sense of humour! ;)

Congratulations on your move to Globe and Mail! I had saved Saturday's paper to read on Sunday (too busy with New Year's plans) and was shocked (and disappointed) to read this morning that Saturday's Wheels article would be your last!!! The first thing I look at when reading the Saturday Star is for your Wheels article!
I immediately went onto your website, and am very relieved that I will be able to continue reading your Motherlode and Wheels articles online. Being the mother of a teenager, your writings often make me laugh (and sometimes cry!).
All the best in 2012!!!

After recovering from the terrible shock of reading the ending of your Dec. 31 Wheels column, Lorraine, I turned to my laptop to email you. Shock no. 2! You're going to write for the 'Globe'! (My wife says you're a turncoat!)
The readers of that paper are the lucky ones as they'll have a topnotch automobile journalist's column to read every Friday. However, I'm glad your material will also appear on your website as I will not be buying The Globe and Mail! I've always preferred the Toronto Star as I like its typography, design and makeup. The Star is a paper for the people (99%), the Globe for management and business people (1%).
I wish you every success, Lorraine, and look forward to reading your delightful prose.

Hi Lorraine-most definitely the Star is the loser here...cant tell you how awful it was to not be able to read Motherlode in today's Star. Such good news that I will be able to read it elsewhere. Bestest of wishes to you!Marcia Horsfall

Lorraine, the Star will shine a little less brightly now you are gone, but I am glad to see that I can read you in the Globe online - and, I assume the Spec for your Motherlode column. (But isn't the Spec owned by Torstar anyway?)
In any event, the best of wishes, and a great start to the new year.

Geez, late to my own party!

Thanks, everyone. Been a hectic week turning around, but my first column runs this Friday, the 6th.

The Spec still has Motherlode (yes, it's owned by Torstar. I dunno), but they also have a paywall. In either case, I will be posting my stuff here, as always. On the blog page (this one) you can hit the RSS feed - that orange square above the Olympus tag on the left up there - and it will put this into your bookmarked favourites.

Cuz that's right, right? I'm a bookmarked favourite?!

Sad news reading your note AFTER FIVE YEARS in the Toronto Star. I so enjoyed reading these articles. I only read WHEELS for your comments. But anyway, congratulations on your move to the OTHER newspaper ( I do not read it) and I will definitely bookmark you here and continue to enjoy your Blogs. All the Best in 2012!
